The Original Story of Irvine, California
A couple thousand years ago, Irvine was populated primarily by members of the Gabrieleño tribe, an indigenous community that lived more or less peacefully until Spaniard Gaspar de Portola arrived in 1769. The Mexican government began assuming control of the Gabrieleño’s land 52 years later, leading to a drastic change in the cultural composition of what is now Irvine.
